An autologous unit of whole blood was collected on a 33-year-old woman in preparation for a knee replacement procedure in 3 weeks. The whole blood unit had her hyphenated last name, first name, and last four digits of her social security number for identification. The lab computer system, however, only had her married name and first name, medical record number, and social security number.
What should be done with this blood product?
